My Sister Saint: Teresa Benedicta of the Cross

Written By Margalita Poletunow

August 9, Memorial day of Teresa Benedicta of the Cross

Teresa Benedicta of the Cross has long been a saint I call my sister saint. Her truth and insight have guided me, offering solace to my soul in some of life’s most difficult seasons.

One of my favorite quotes from her is this:

“From God’s point of view—there is no chance, and that the whole of my life, down to every detail, has been mapped out in God’s divine providence and makes complete and perfect sense in God’s all-seeing eyes.”

When my heart begins to fret… when I feel like I’ve been dealt a bad hand… When my miscarriage feels painfully unfair, or when others cannot see the depth of my grief for a baby I prayed for—and my questions toward God grow heavy—it is then that St. Teresa Benedicta takes me by the hand. Her words breathe life into my dry and weary soul.

Perhaps today, you are in that place — where miscarriage, pain, and the weight of a lost dream feel unshakable. I cannot take away your pain. But I can remind you: God’s plan is unfolding, often in ways we cannot yet see or understand.

Take one day at a time. Take a deep breath. Remember that you are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, like Teresa Benedicta, who are interceding for you right now.

How your story will unfold, I cannot say.
But I know this: God sees you. And your whole life is before Him.
